The award carried a prize of $100,000. San Miguel is a Catholic middle school that is operated by St. John’s College High School. The school is located on 16th Street, NW in the Washington neighborhood of Columbia Heights. San Miguel works with Latino boys from economically disadvantaged families. The award recognized San Miguel for the school’s emphasis on reading and math skills, its involvement of parents in the educational process, and the school’s commitment to their students after they graduate from San Miguel. Approximately one quarter of the boys are immigrants, but all of the boys are sons of immigrants. Most of the boys are of Salvadoran descent, but the school has boys from other countries, including Peru and Bolivia in South America; Guatemala, Honduras, and Nicaragua in Central America; the Dominican Republic in the Caribbean; and Mexico. All of the boys receive financial assistance. Fight for Children is a Washington based foundation committed to improving the education in the District of Columbia. Founded in 1999 by St. John’s alumnus Joe Robert, Fight for Children has raised $80 million for various programs to aid 150 youth groups. Fight for Children also recognized Strong John Thompson Public School and E.L. Haynes Public Charter School with similar grants. **************************** Related links: "3 Schools Are Given $100,000 Grants" Washington Post, April 25, 2008 Fight for Children's Quality Schools Initiative
